When you cannot complete all prescribed reps: Keep the weight the same and focus on completing all reps before adding load. Compound barbell movements: These allow the most precise loading through small plate increments and should be progressed systematically with the smallest available plates. Dumbbell exercises: Available in fixed increments that are often larger than ideal, particularly at lower weights where five-pound jumps represent a large percentage increase. Never increasing weight. The most common error in experienced trainees. Increasing weight before technique is established. Adding load to a movement that is not yet performed with consistent technique reinforces poor patterns under increased stress. Technique quality across all prescribed sets at a given weight is the prerequisite for adding weight, not the achievement of the prescribed rep count alone.
